U15 Devon Vs Somerset 21 Oct 07
Exeter University

Match Report
21/10/07
Team:
Luke Bovey, Simon
Brassington, George Joannou, Ben Shapland, Luke Rutter, Charlie Ross.
Rowan Despard,
Laura Anson, Rachel Perkins, April Richards, Jennie Higgins, Olivia
Marshall.
This is my first
match in charge of the Devon U15 team and I was a little unsure of
what to expect from Somerset in this age group. Fortunately the
players in my team are players that have been with me for two to three
years in the U13 squad over the previous seasons, so I was feeling
quite confident. However due to half term I was five players down due
to family holidays which meant the pressure was really on in this
first match of the season.
The Boys singles
saw some really close games. My number one Luke Bovey had a three
setter against the Somerset number one boy. Unfortunately the game
went to Somerset after a spirited display by Luke.
Only Simon
Brassington came out on top in the boys singles.
The girls had a
better time of things, Laura, Rachel, April, Jennie and Olivia all
winning their games.
So after the
singles the score stood at 6-6. All to play for.
The boys had a
hard time in the Doubles going down 2-7. However Luke and Simon won
two games thus scoring two valuable points for Devon.
Devon’s girls hit
back hard though. Winning 8-1. The girls put on and awesome display
and the Somerset girls had no really answer.
So going into
the Mixed Doubles the score stood at 16-14 to Devon. We needed to win
3 mixed games to win the match.
Our first pair,
Luke and Laura, after a hard fight lost. 16-15.
Our second pair,
Rowan and Simon, won. 17-15
Third pair,
George and Rachel, lost. 17-16.
Fourth pair, Ben
and April, lost. 17-17! No finger nails left!
Fifth pair, Luke
and Jennie, won. 18-17.
Sixth pair,
Charlie and Olivia, after a 3 setter, won! 19-17!
What a match. It
went down to the last game.
My assistant Ray
Puttick and I had no nerves left after the match. What a good way to
start the season.
Players of the
match are Charlie Ross and Olivia Marshall. The victory came down to
their last mixed doubles game. It went to a third end, and they didn’t
buckle under the pressure. They kept their focus, won the all
important game and secured the victory for Devon.
Our next match is
against Cornwall on the 18th November. Bring it on!

Devon U15 Lead
Coach.
