BADMINTON England U17, 15 & 13 Singles Grading 2007/8

The purpose of the grading system is to provide a manageable competitive circuit.  Grades are not performance indicators, this is the purpose of the ranking lists.  They are however designed to provide guidance to players, parents and coaches when deciding an appropriate Individual Tournament Programme.

There are three grades for the 2007/8 season; Grades 1, 2, and 3 with all other players classed as ungraded.

The grading lists have been compiled by the Schools and Youth Board using the following criteria:

 Players who were a year young last year (e.g. Under 14 in the Under 15 Age Group last year) retained the grade they achieved at the end of the 2006/7 season.

 The grade players had achieved in 2006/7 was reduced by 1 if the player changed age groups (e.g. Under 15 grade 2 becomes an Under 17 grade 3). However if the player had, in the 2006/7 season, obtained a higher grade in the age group above they retain this grade.

 Grades were modified using the results of the even age group tournaments.

 Ranking lists were then referred to in an effort to ensure that no players had been overlooked.

Our close liaison with the WBU continues and this year we have incorporated an Under 13 Gold Event in Cwmbran into our programme. It is also hoped that by the end of the season we will have reached agreements with the other Home Nations to establish a UK Competition Network for next season. During the year some Welsh players will appear on the lists having been recommended by the WBU, however gradually greater numbers will be earning their grades by competing in England and Wales.

This season, Under 17 Gold Tournaments will be used as qualifying events for the UK School Games in 2008. One of our targets is to introduce a UK Junior Ranking List.

What to do if you think you are the wrong grade?

You must appeal in writing (phone-calls will not be considered) to:

Competition and Events Co-ordinator (Juniors), BADMINTON England, National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK8 9LA (e-mail: nikkitarrant@badmintonengland.co.uk)

Appeals will only be upheld in exceptional circumstances or where a clear error has been made. Any letter/e-mail should state the reason for the appeal and contain substantial evidence in the form of results to support the appeal. The final decision will be with the S&Y Board Grading Committee. Players may appeal either to be upgraded or downgraded.

For the 2007/8 season, players will now only be upgraded on the following dates:

October 31st 2007, December 19th 2007, February 28th 2008 and July 31st 2008.

Updated grading lists will be published on the website on each these dates.

N.B There is no grading for Under 11's.
