After
a busy weekend the week before there were some tired players on the
court for this match. Yet once again they all rose to the challenge
and gave it everything they had. The result was one of the closest we
will have all season and we were unlucky to lose so narrowly.
The
Boys took a clean sweep in the singles. Unfortunately Gloucester’s
strength was in their Girls and they took all the games in the Girls
singles.
The
Doubles also reflected this, the boys winning 7-2 (Samuel Owens and
Zachary Phillips, and Tom Otto and Jamie Bishop again winning all
three convincingly), and the girls losing 7-2 (the new pairing of
Jenny Maddison and Hannah Laidler taking one game, and Katrina Tucker
and Abigail Summers winning one after taking it to three ends).
Going
into the mixed the match score was 15 – 15. A quick break was had and
then all six games went on court together. A lot of nail biting and
looking away from all coaches and parents. The players seemingly cool
and determined in the face of the challenge. The first couple of
games off we had lost. Then Samuel Owens and Jenny Maddison came off
having won their game in three ends. They were closely followed by
Tom Otto and Abigail Summers who had won in two straight. It was 17
-17, and I was near a heart attack. Gloucester nicked another three
ender and then everyone’s attention was turned to the last game on,
with the score 18-17 to Gloucester. We were watching Dominic Garside
and Emily Hutchings playing their first mixed doubles game together.
They had won the first end and then lost the second end. The tension
was high in the final end, and we narrowly lost 19-21.
Player of the match goes to Dominic Garside who worked very hard
throughout the match but particularly in the Mixed where he was paired
with an U11 and played some great badminton, exploiting his opponent’s
weaknesses and was unlucky to lose in the third end.
