JUNIOR TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT

Circuit Playing Format

The preliminary round of the singles and level doubles in all circuit tournaments will be played in groups. The group size will depend on the size of entry. For Gold events the average size group will be three, for Silver events the average size should be four and for Bronze events the minimum group size will be four. Group winners only qualify for the knock-out stages. Mixed doubles will normally be knock-out format.

NB: In some areas of the country, there are sometimes insufficient entries to support separate Silver and Bronze Events. For this reason in 2008-9 should a Silver tournament, which is scheduled for the same day as a Bronze tournament, have less than eight entries in a singles event, the Tournament Committee may combine the Silver and Bronze Entry for that singles event. At the knock-out stage, the group winners will compete for the Silver Tournament Medals, and the group runners-up for the Bronze Tournament medals. In the doubles events, the Tournament Committee may combine entries if the number of pairs is less than six.

BE Gold Tournaments

These tournaments are run by BADMINTON England or by Counties on behalf of BE. Any grade of player may enter these events. Valid entries received from all Grade 1 players within their own age group will be accepted. When the entry is over-subscribed, entries will be restricted by the Seeding Committee using the criteria given below. Average anticipated entry will be 70 singles players. Games will be best of 3 to 21 rally points, extended to 30 if necessary. All disciplines will be seeded by the Seeding Committee. All Gold Tournaments will be two day events with the Semi-finals and Finals at least, being played on the Sunday.

BE Silver Tournaments

These events are part of the BADMINTON England Junior Circuit, run on our behalf by County BAs. Any grade of player (except for Grade 1 players from within the age group), may enter these events. Valid entries received from all Grade 2 players within their own age group will be accepted (average anticipated entry will be 80 singles players). Games will be the best of 3 to 15 rally points, extended to 21 if necessary. Most Silver tournaments will not play a mixed event. Events will be seeded by the tournament’s seeding group, using the latest ranking lists.

BE Bronze Tournaments

These events are part of the BADMINTON England Junior Circuit, run on our behalf by County BAs. Grade 1 and 2 players from within the age group are not permitted to enter these events. Where the entry to an event is over-subscribed, entries will be restricted by the tournament’s seeding group using a mixture of criteria (see below). Grade 3 players from within the age group will be accepted above un-graded players (average anticipated entry will be 80 singles players). Games will be 1 game to 21 rally points. This is extended to 30 points in the knock-out rounds only. Most Bronze tournaments will not play a mixed event.

NB: Graded players, when playing in the age group above (unless their name appears on the older age group lists), should be regarded as one grade lower than that in their own age group (e.g. U13 grade 1, becomes U15 grade 2, becomes U17 Grade 3).

Silver and Bronze tournaments will normally be run on one day, consisting of singles and level doubles only. All events must be played to their conclusion on that day. Please see individual event information on entry form to confirm date/s of tournament.

U11 SINGLES and DOUBLES EVENTS: All Under 11 tournaments are un-graded and will only include singles and level doubles. The initial rounds of these events will be played in groups, the size of which being as large as the entry will permit. Each match will be the best of 3 games to 11 rally points, extended to 15 if necessary.

Restricting entry to oversubscribed Circuit Tournaments:

Where entries need to be restricted, the following criteria will be used:

  • Late entries will be declined.
  • Known form.
  • Ranking positions using the ranking lists posted on the BADMINTON ENGLAND website.
  • Age. If the above do not provide us with a clear list of withdrawals, those borderline players who fall outside the age group will be omitted first.
  • In Bronze Events, preference may be given to the more local players (at the discretion of the Tournament Committee).

NB. The ranking list which will be used for seeding and restrictions will be the latest one published on the website when a tournament’s entry closes.

Ranking System

BADMINTON England has established individual senior and junior ranking lists, which are published at regular intervals on the BE website. More information can be found on rankings by choosing the National Rankings' section on this website. NB. These are published for singles and level doubles only at present.

These events are all listed in the Player’s Diary. Invitation events, bonanzas, restricted and foreign tournaments cannot be included as qualifying tournaments. The Under 13 and 11 Berkshire tournaments take place on 14th and 15th March; players who play in these events will be able to use them as a qualifying event.

A player entering two English National Age Group Championships must during the season have fulfilled the qualification requirements for their own age group, and played in one tournament in the higher age group.

In exceptional circumstances, the qualification requirements may be waived on application IN WRITING from the player, or player’s parent/guardian/coach.
