2008-09 Season Junior Gradings
BADMINTON England U13, 15 & 17 Singles Grading 2008/9
The purpose of the grading system is to provide a manageable
competitive circuit. Grades are not performance indicators,
this is the purpose of the ranking lists. They are however designed to
provide guidance to players, parents and coaches and help then plan an
appropriate Individual Tournament Programme.
There continues to be three grades for the 2008/9 season; Grades 1,
2, and 3 with all other players classed as ungraded. NB.
There is no grading for Under 11's.
The start of season grading lists have been compiled by the Schools
and Youth Board using the following criteria:
- Players who were a year young last year (e.g. Under 14 in the
Under 15 Age Group last year) retained the grade they achieved at
the end of the 2007/8 season.
- The grade players had achieved in 2007/8 season was reduced by
one if the player changed age groups (e.g. Under 15 grade 2 becomes
an Under 17 grade 3). However if the player had, in the 2007/8
season, obtained a higher grade in the age group above they retain
this grade.
- Grades were modified using the results of the even age group
tournaments.
- Ranking lists were then referred to in an effort to ensure that
no players had been overlooked.
Our close liaison with the Home Countries continues and this year
we have incorporated two Under 17 Gold events, one in Cwmbran and one
to be held in Northern Ireland, into our programme. We are also
working closely with BADMINTON Scotland in an effort to encourage and
publicise greater cross border activity.
NB. Under 17 Gold Tournaments will be used as
qualifying events for the UK School Games in 2008. Please see the UK
School Games section of the website for more information. One of our
future targets is to introduce a UK Junior Ranking List.
What to do if you think you have been incorrectly graded.

Grading Information
Players are graded on their singles record only.
The purpose of the grading structure is to provide players with a
guide as to the appropriate level of play for their ability, enabling
them, together with their coaches and parents, to plan a structured
Tournament Programme. A player of any ability may enter a Gold Event,
Grade 2 and below may enter Silver Events and Grade 3 and un-graded
players Bronze events.
Grade 1
• S&Y Board Grading Committee will select players for this grade
using the grading lists, the end of season rankings and the results of
the 2007/8 season.
• There will be at least 24 players in this grade (both sexes), at
the start of the season.
• Notification of players selected for this grade will be posted on
the website and sent by letter or e-mail to those for whom we have
personal details, by the beginning of July.
• Players in this grade when playing in a circuit tournament in
their own age group will be guaranteed a place in BE Gold events
(valid entry permitting).
• Grade 1 players may not enter Silver or Bronze events in their
own age group but are welcome to enter Silver tournaments in the age
group above. Unless they have qualified as Grade 1 in the age group
above, the grade of a player is adjusted down a grade when playing up
an age group i.e. a Grade 1 will become a Grade 2 player.

in their own age group.

group but are welcome to enter Bronze tournaments in the immediate age
group above. Unless they have qualified as Grade 2 in the age group
above, the grade of a player is adjusted down a grade when playing up
an age group i.e. a Grade 2 will become a Grade 3 player.
